Iron Control

Primary tabs

Product Code ::RXSOL-81-8167-210
Product Short Description: Iron Control
Product Description:

Iron Control Liquid is a concentrated liquid iron-control additive developed for use in oilfield acidizing, well stimulation, well cleaning and related chemical treatment operations.

The product is based on a synergistic combination of organic active compounds, providing effective complexing and sequestration of dissolved iron. During acidizing operations, iron may be introduced into the treatment fluid through dissolution of rust, corrosion products, mill scale, iron-containing deposits, tubulars and formation minerals.

As the acid becomes spent and the pH of the treatment fluid increases, dissolved ferric iron may form insoluble iron-containing precipitates. These precipitates can contribute to formation plugging, permeability impairment, sludge formation and deposition within the wellbore and production system.

Iron Control Liquid complexes dissolved iron and assists in maintaining it in a soluble or dispersed form during the treatment and subsequent fluid recovery.

The concentrated liquid formulation offers convenient handling, rapid mixing and easy incorporation into acid treatment packages.

Product Application:

Iron Control Liquid is designed primarily for:

Matrix Acidizing

Used as an additive in acidizing fluids to control dissolved iron generated during contact between acid and tubulars, scale or formation minerals.

Well Stimulation

Helps minimize secondary iron precipitation during stimulation operations as the injected acid reacts and becomes spent.

Wellbore Cleaning

Suitable for treatment fluids used to remove rust, iron oxide deposits and mineral scale from tubing and associated equipment.

Acid Scale Removal

Can be incorporated into acid descaling formulations where dissolution of iron-containing deposits is expected.

Pickling / Tubing Cleaning

Useful during acid pickling and pre-treatment of tubing where significant quantities of iron may enter the cleaning solution.

Acid Pre-Flush

May be incorporated into selected pre-flush formulations where iron stabilization is required prior to the main acid treatment.

Product Dose:

Procedure for effective IRON CONTROL during acidic treatment:

The optimum dosage depends on:
  • Expected dissolved iron concentration
  • Ferric-to-ferrous iron ratio
  • Acid concentration
  • Type of acid system
  • Formation mineralogy
  • Calcium concentration
  • Bottom-hole temperature
  • Contact time
  • Amount of rust and iron scale present
  • Shut-in time
General Starting Dosage

For preliminary field evaluation:
  • 1-5% by volume of the acid treatment fluid
  • may be evaluated as an initial dosage range.
For systems with significant iron contamination, the dosage should be determined by laboratory testing based on the anticipated iron loading.

Typical Treatment Dosage Guidelines

Expected Iron Loading Suggested Starting Evaluation
Low 1-2% v/v
Moderate 2-3% v/v
High 3-5% v/v
Very high / severe iron contamination Laboratory determination required
Product Note:

FUNCTION OF RXSOL Iron Control Liquid in Oilfield and Acid treatment of wells:

Iron Control Liquid works primarily through sequestration and chelation.

Organic complexes dissolved iron and helps reduce the tendency of ferric iron to form insoluble hydroxide deposits as the treatment acid becomes spent.

Its acidity also assists in maintaining a lower-pH environment during the initial stages of treatment.

RXSOL Iron Control has strong sequestring agent capable of forming complexes with a range of multivalent metal ions. Its inclusion supplements the iron-complexing capability of the formulation and assists in controlling dissolved metallic species.

The combination provides broader metal-ion complexing capability than a simple single-component organic acid treatment and is particularly useful where iron contamination is expected from tubulars, rust, scale or formation minerals.

Industrial area:
Excessive Iron Control concentration in calcium-rich spent acid can potentially promote formation of poorly soluble calcium-citrate or mixed metal complexes.

Therefore, higher dosage should not automatically be considered better.

For carbonate formations or calcium-rich scale removal, laboratory testing should evaluate the complete treatment fluid at:
  • Expected bottom-hole temperature
  • Maximum anticipated calcium concentration
  • Maximum anticipated iron concentration
  • Initial acid strength
  • Spent-acid condition
  • Expected shut-in/contact time
The treated fluid should remain free from significant precipitation throughout the anticipated treatment and flowback conditions.

Why is it important to control iron level in oil well treatment processes?

Acidizing fluids can dissolve iron from:
  • Rusted tubing
  • Iron oxide scale
  • Mill scale
  • Corrosion products
  • Formation minerals
  • Surface treatment equipment
  • Pipelines and tanks
  • Ferric iron is particularly problematic because its solubility decreases rapidly as acid becomes spent.
Formation of insoluble iron compounds can lead to:
  • Formation plugging
  • Reduced permeability
  • Reduced stimulation efficiency
  • Deposits within pore spaces
  • Increased solids in flowback
  • Sludge formation
  • Production impairment

Iron Control Liquid helps minimize these problems by chemically complexing dissolved iron.
Product Useful Area:

RXSOL Iron Control Liquid is compatible in systems using following oil well additives:

  • Hydrochloric acid systems
  • Organic acid systems
  • Acid scale removers
  • Corrosion inhibitors
  • Non-emulsifiers
  • Surfactants
  • Mutual solvents
  • Selected anti-sludge additives
  • Selected stimulation additives

A laboratory compatibility test is strongly recommended before field use.

Important steps while using RXSOL Iron Control Liquid

  1. Prepare the required acid solution in a clean treatment tank.
  2. Begin circulation or agitation.
  3. Add the calculated quantity of Iron Control Liquid slowly into the treatment fluid.
  4. Continue mixing until a uniform solution is obtained.
  5. Add other compatible stimulation additives according to the approved treatment program.
  6. Verify compatibility before pumping downhole.
  7. Pump the treatment according to the established acidizing program.
  8. Recover and dispose of spent fluids according to applicable environmental requirements.
For critical stimulation operations, a representative spent-acid compatibility test should be performed before field application.
